New Zealand Challenge (NZL-14) Built in 1991 for Michael Fays New Zealand Challenge, NZL 14 or 3A as she was called was the third of four yachts built for the 1992 Cup. She was designed by Bruce Farr and shared the tandem keel concept with her sisterNZL 20. She was built atCooksons Boat works and was voted by theteam asthe fastest of the four yachts. She ultimately was not chosen for the Louis Vuitton Cup, but did serve as a trial horse. Her skipper was Russell Coutts.NZL 14 sailed in the 1991 IACC Worlds finishing second. She then became the trial horse for Team New Zealand in 1995 back in Auckland. In 1998 she was purchased by the Hong Kong Challenge and commissioned in New Zealand as a training yacht. She was later repossessed by Michael Fay and sat in a trucking yard with NZL 20 for the next three years until John Sweeney and Tina Kleinjan found them. John and Tina bought both of them and NZL14 was assembled and sailed during the 2000 America’s Cup. She was then sent back to San Francisco and was the first IACC yacht in the San Francisco Fleet. She had a new paint job and a new engine installed. Her tandem, keel was removed and her L shape keel installed for more reliability. She is offered for sale at $250,000 USD to the right owner (edit in...... she enjoys life in San Francisco as a Sailing Billboard. She still sports her original red paint job and now has a new 125 hp Yanmar Turbo Diesel to propel her around the Bay) Sold April 2005 to a group in Auckland Now working as a toursit attratction in Queenstown, NZ.
